They can weigh up to nine pounds, possibly more. That means a pinch of 810 pounds from that big ugly claw. I believe that’s more than a lion’s bite.
They can tear coconuts open with their claws, which is how they got their name. Supposedly, their meat is sweet, with a hint of coconut flavor.
I think the 9 lb (4.1 kg) coconut crab, Birgus latro, is the leading contender for that title. It’s the world’s largest terrestrial invertebrate.
