BEAUTY BENEFITS OF HONEY

FIGHTS ACNE

Honey deals with acne on multiple levels. For starters, honey is a great deep cleanser that draws out the impurities from your pores.

It is also an antiseptic and antibacterial that calms the inflammation and tackles the infection.

Honey also keeps the skin moisturised without making it oily, thereby making you less prone to breakouts.

HOW TO APPLY: Just apply raw honey on your face in a thin layer. Leave on for 30 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water.

You could also apply honey localised to the area of the breakout.

Take a small amount on a cotton ball and apply to the area of the breakout. Mix in a little tea tree and lavender oil to boost honey’s acne fighting powers.

Do remember to do a patch test on your arm before applying honey to your face as some people are very allergic to it.

Leave a little amount on your arm for 30 minutes and check for hives and redness.

If there is no reaction, you can use honey with a free mind. Do note that honey is effective only on acne caused by bacterial infections.

TREATS BLEMISHES

Not just does honey deal with acne, it also lightens the scars left behind by it.

Honey is well known for its ability to lighten blemishes.

HOW TO APPLY: Smear some honey on a cotton ball and apply directly on your blemishes. Ensure that the blemishes and spots are covered with a thin layer of honey.

Leave the honey on for the entire night for best results and wash off with lukewarm water in the morning. Repeat this process every night for a few weeks and you will soon see your scars fade.

HEALS WOUNDS

Honey is used in Ayurveda and other streams of traditional and alternative medicine, to treat wounds.

The antioxidants and antibacterials in honey speed up the healing process.

They also prevent further infections.

Honey has been proven to be effective for burn wounds, bacterial infections and pressure ulcers.

honey can reduce the healing times of burn wounds while another study published in the International Journal of Lower Extremity Wounds found that honey as a wound dressing clears infections and prevents them from spreading; controls and eliminate strong odours from wounds; reduces permanent scarring, and acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Do ask your medical practitioner before you apply honey on a wound.

HOW TO APPLY: Try and use only pure Manuka honey (this expensive honey is sourced from Manuka blossoms found only in New Zealand) for this.

Spread a thin layer of honey over the wound and apply a gauze dressing over it.

Pre-packaged wound dressings with honey are also available in some medical stores

ANTI-AGING AGENT

Honey is rich in antioxidants that work to slow down aging.

Applying honey regularly will keep your skin looking younger for longer.

Honey also reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

A natural humectant, it moisturises the top layers of the skin and thereby prevents it from getting dry and irritated.

HOW TO APPLY: Make an anti-aging honey mask by mixing a tablespoon of honey with a tablespoon of milk, or dahi.

Leave the mixture on your face for 30 minutes or massage it in with circular movements.

This will get more blood flowing to the face and will tighten your skin as well.

Wash off the mask with warm water. Do this regularly to reduce fine lines and age spots by improving the elasticity of your skin.

GETS YOUR SKIN GLOWING

Honey is extremely moisturising and regular usage will improve your complexion and give it a glow.

The sugars in honey act as natural humectant and emollients that increase the water content in your skin.

Humecants draws moisture from the air into your skin. This moisture stays in your skin and prevents dryness. This is the reason why honey is used as a base for a large number of skincare products.

The enzymes in honey go deep into the skin and moisturise it from within.
