MENSTRUATION: FOOD TIPS
Every WOMEN should eat more of healthy foods during their periods than their usual intake in normal days, While women are on their period too much salt, alcohol, sugar, cigarette, spicy foods, coffee and red meat intake should be avoided.
Maintaining a healthy diet and proper hygiene during menstruation helps break the intergeneration cycle of malnutrition.
Foods women should eat during their period:
1) FISH:
Fish is very rich in protein, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids which makes it nutritious. When a woman consume enough iron, it will hinder the dip in iron levels that they might experience while menstruating.
Omega-3 fatty acids present in fish also makes the pain they experience while on their period to reduce.
2) LENTILS AND BEANS:
Consumimg lentils and beans during menstruation is super healthy due to the protein content in them. They can be eaten in place of red meat. Also they contain iron, which makes them good for the body, that's if a woman's iron level is low.
3)FRUITS:
Always consume fruits that are rich in water e.g watermelon during menstruation. These fruits help keep the body hydrated and can prevent sugar cravings in women without eating a lot of refined sugars which can cause a spike in their glucose levels.
4)NUTS:
Nuts are food high in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamin and magnesium. If as a woman you don’t want to consume nuts on their own, try nut butters or nut-based milks, it will really help you while on your period.
5) LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES:
It is normal for your iron levels to decrease during your period, especially if your menstrual flow is high. This causes fatigue, dizziness and body pain. Leafy green vegetables like spinach can help increase your iron levels.
6) WATER:
Every living thing needs water to survive, so drinking enough water is very good while menstruating. Keeping the body hydrated can help reduce symptoms such as headache, which is a major sign of menstruation.
